Overly dramatic self-watering plant system
A plant caretaker that behaves like it has feelings
Self-watering systems are nothing new, but Pico-powered versions sometimes lean hard into humor. One maker attached a moisture sensor, a pump, and an OLED display that shows a cartoon face representing the plant’s “mood.” When the soil dries out, the face becomes exaggeratedly sad. When the moisture returns to normal levels, it brightens up as if relieved.
The Pico also keeps detailed logs of watering cycles and soil readings. The logs serve no practical purpose for a simple succulent, yet they add a sense of importance to a system that barely needs automation. Owners often find themselves checking the plant just to see which expression it is showing. Some even adjust the room lighting or move the plant to improve readings.
In more elaborate versions, the Pico sends notifications to the owner’s phone. A thirsty plant sends a polite request for attention, while a well-hydrated one offers cheerful updates. It creates the illusion of a tiny companion sharing small thoughts throughout the day. The whole experience borders on theatrical and remains endlessly charming.
